What the SHAFT does
Shafts transmit rotation between the motor, the gearing and the chuck. They run in bearings and bushings and carry seals on their journals, so their surface finish matters as much as their strength.
Signs it needs replacing
- Wear steps or grooves worn into the seal journals
- Spline wear at the drive end
- Runout that can be seen as wobble under rotation
- Repeat failure of the seal running on the shaft
Before you fit it
Replace the bearings and the seals that run on a shaft whenever the shaft is changed. A worn seal journal is the usual hidden cause of a leak that returns after every seal replacement.
