What the RING does
Rings retain, locate, guide or seal depending on where they sit. In a drifter they are small, inexpensive components holding much more expensive assemblies in position, and their failure is usually first noticed as damage somewhere else.
Signs it needs replacing
- Axial play in a component the ring should be retaining
- Ring found deformed, spread or displaced from its groove
- Groove damage on the shaft or bore
- Wear debris around the ring seat
Before you fit it
Never reuse a retaining ring that has been sprung once; it has lost the tension that keeps it seated. Check the groove for damage before fitting a new one.
