What the RETAINER CHUCK does

The chuck assembly grips the shank adapter and transmits rotation to it while allowing the shank to slide axially under percussion. It is the interface where rotary torque and reciprocating impact meet, which makes it one of the most heavily loaded assemblies in the drifter.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Shank adapter slipping or free-spinning under load
  • Rounded or hammered splines on either the chuck or the shank
  • Rotation stalling in hard rock at normal hydraulic pressure
  • Rattle or knock from the front of the drifter under rotation

Before you fit it

Chuck and shank adapter wear as a pair. Fitting a new chuck onto a worn shank rounds the new splines quickly, so inspect or replace both together and check the chuck bushing at the same time.

General guidance for this class of component. Always work to the torque figures, clearances and service intervals in your machine's own manual.
