What the GEAR HOUSING does
The rotation gearing converts the rotation motor's output into the torque that turns the drill string. It works against reactive torque coming back from the bit and against the impact pulses passing through the chuck, so tooth loading is far from steady.
Signs it needs replacing
- Rotation that stalls in hard rock at normal pressure
- Knocking or clatter that changes with rotation speed
- Chipped, pitted or stepped tooth flanks
- Metal fragments in the gear housing oil
Before you fit it
Meshing gears are replaced as a pair — a new gear against a worn mating one concentrates load on a few teeth and fails quickly. Check the bearings supporting the gear at the same time, since backlash from a failing bearing is what chips teeth in the first place.
