What the DAMPING PISTON does
The damping system absorbs the energy that reflects back up the drill string when the bit meets a void, a fracture or a change in rock hardness. Without it that reflected shock travels into the drifter's own structure. Damping components take deliberate punishment so the housings and the feed do not.

- Heavy vibration transmitted into the boom and feed
- Cracking of drill rods and couplings above normal rates
- Loss of the drifter's ability to hold the drill string against the rock
- Falling penetration rate in fractured ground specifically
