What the BUSH does
Bushings and liners are the sacrificial bearing surfaces inside a drifter. They guide the percussion piston and the shank adapter, hold them concentric under impact, and are deliberately made to wear before the expensive housings and shafts they protect. Front and guide bushings take the worst of it, sitting closest to the dust, water and side load coming back from the hole.
Signs it needs replacing
- Radial play in the shank adapter that can be felt by hand
- Repeat seal failures — a worn bushing lets the shaft move off centre and cuts the seal
- Oval or stepped wear visible on the bore
- Rising oil consumption with no external leak
Before you fit it
Measure the mating shaft or piston before fitting: a new bushing on a worn shaft simply moves the clearance problem. Bushings are pressed to an interference fit — heating the housing or chilling the bushing seats it without galling the bore.
