What the BACK UP RING does
A back-up ring sits behind a seal and stops it extruding into the clearance gap under pressure. It carries no sealing duty itself — its whole job is to keep the seal in shape at the pressure peaks a percussion circuit produces on every cycle.
Signs it needs replacing
- Seal material extruded, nibbled or shaved at its edge
- Seal life much shorter than expected with no surface damage to explain it
- Leakage that appears only at high pressure
- Back-up ring found broken or spiralled
Before you fit it
Fit the back-up ring on the low-pressure side of the seal and the right way round; installed backwards it does nothing and the seal extrudes as though it were absent.
