What the BACK HEAD does
The head assemblies close the ends of the percussion mechanism, contain working pressure and hold the piston bore's alignment. The back head takes the reaction of every blow the machine delivers.
Signs it needs replacing
- Leakage at the head joint that returns after resealing
- Bolts loosening repeatedly or stretching
- Cracks around the port faces or bolt bosses
- Bore wear where the piston passes
Before you fit it
Tighten head bolts to the specified torque in the specified sequence. Uneven clamping distorts the bore, which then wears the piston and its bushings unevenly — a slow failure that looks like a seal problem for months.
